What Does A Spike In BP After Child Birth Indicate?
My daughter gave birth yesterday...40 years old, normal pregnancy, difficult labor, had an epidural eventually which helped labor, just after birth her blood pressure spiked dramatically and nurses administered medication; there was great concern for a short period; blood pressure returned to nearly normal after a few hours and she was released; is this preclampsia they refer to? Is she prone to that condition now? Are there ongoing concerns related to that spike? I was told women can die from that particular occurrence. Thank you.
certainly preeclamsia is a possibility but it may not be. there are other thinks your doctor can do to diagnose this. as she is 40 years, this could be essential hypertension also.
if the blood pressure is persistently more than 140 with no other complaints you can watch and see. if it is more than 160 she should see her OB or general physician.
look for any visual problems. she should also get urine studies. look for any bruises or heavy vaginal vleeding. all the are favoring towards preeclamsia. then please do not wait take her to OB.
I wish speedy recovery for your daughter.
