What Does A Swelling On The Head Post Injury Indicate?

My 10 year old son hit his eye brow bone on the back of another s kids head going for a football on the playground. Only had swelling and bruising that looks horrible as a symptom. Getting an X-ray to be sure but doc pushed on it and was no pain and felt like nothing broken but was wondering if that kind of bump would normally cause pain if the bone was broken even if hairline?
