What Does A Swollen Bump On The Penis Head Suggest?

46 year old male, overall good health, married, vasectomy 3 years ago, circumsized many years ago, no notable medical conditions... Had sex once on the weekend, nothing rough or out of the ordinary. Woke up this morning with a soft swollen sack on my penis below and near the head. The head is also swollen but I can still urinate (albeit slower than usual). No pain but some slight tenderness.

Hello,

A swollen bump on the penis head is indicative of molluscum contagiosum or Fordyce spots. Fordyce spots don’t require treatment, but options are available if the appearance of the spots is causing you distress. It can be treated with topical or oral antibiotics and sometimes laser therapy can be recommended. Molluscum contagiosum, it is contagious so avoid sexual contact till the bumps are there.

It goes away without treatment within 6 to 12 months but treatment is recommended as it is contagious. Treatment includes scraping, cryosurgery, and topical treatments. Other medical conditions that may cause similar symptoms are genital warts, genital herpes, etc.

You are suggested to get clinically examined by a urologist so that the pathology causing you symptoms is detected and treated at the earliest. Stay away from addictions if any. Take care of your hygiene. Wear loose fitting soft cotton clothes.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
