What Does A Swollen, Tender And Firm Spherical Growth Below The Jawbone Suggest?

My younger brother, age 15, found a swollen, sphere shaped thing below his jawbone, which he can push around to the side of his face. It is very firm and tender, but not totally defined against his skin. You can clearly feel a spherical growth or swollen, what we believe a gland, below his skin. We would like to get an opinion or idea before he sees a local doctor this week.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

Thanks for your query .As you mention that you have swollen ,tender and firm spherical growth under jaw bone which is movable. The most probable cause of this lump is swollen gland.

The gland (submandibular gland) under jaw become swollen sometimes when body try to fight against certain infection like cold or insect bite ans become cyst .I could also possible that the duct of the gland get blocked as result gland become swollen.

I would suggest you to apply warm compresses ti it 2-3 times daily for 10 minutes .If it become further painful or increase in size ,it means there is infection in swollen gland then you should consult doctor for proper evaluation and to rule out other condition like swollen lymph node or lipoma.

Doctor may prescribe oral antibiotics or anti viral medication depending upon cause of infection.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
