my daughter is single and admitted to have sex first and last in may '11,she has her medical examination this december for work permit and all are normal and non rective tpha but weak reactive VDRL which worries me since it was a sexually transmitted deasease in my knowledge but somehow our OB-gynecologist i consulted that it may cause some infectious since my daugther is not sexually active. Please help me on how should i do or any threatment. It would be a grat help to us.
VDRL is a test to detect a STD called as Syphilis. It is a highly sensitive test but not very specific. That means in conditions other than Syphilis also it may be positive in low titres and this condition is called as Biological False Positive. Weakly reactive VDRL means it could be either a very early Syphilis or a Biological False Positive. TPHA has to be repeated once again after 15 days or after a month. If TPHA is persistently non reactive, then your daughter is not having Syphilis. The re-activity is due to some other condition which can induce False positive results. It should be investigated and to be treated. She will be alright. DR S.Murugan
