Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a distended abdomen and can feel a large diagonal mass just below my rib age. No pain involved. No gastrointestinal problems. I do have IPF diagnosised 5 years ago but requires no treatment at this time. Quick smoking 5 years ago but indulge in alcohol every evening about 5 drinks every evening. My doctor has ordered a Ultrasound of my abdomen. This mass has gotten larger over the past years. Can you offer any possible diagnosis? Would like to be informed as much as possible. Iam 69 years old and retired. Never had any surgery. Could this be my liver? Thank you for any help you can offer.
1. Abdominal distension is typically a symptom of an underlying disease or dysfunction in the body rather than an illness itself, so without getting a chance to examine you directly, I'm of the following opinion:
i. As there is history of 5 drinks per day: distension could be because of liver dysfunction [either portal hypertension or cirrhosis]
PS. Consult a Hepatologist for necessary examination and investigations
ii. As you are a diagnosed case of IPF [idiopathic pulmonary fbrosis], thus remember that in chronic cases, the right side of the heart gradually gets involved secondary to lung disease [which we call as cor pulmonale], as such one can see leg/abdominal swelling in fibrosis patient
PS. You and your doctor must re-evaluate your current situation.
iii. Initially, if rest and low salt diet, don't work to relieve symptoms, call your doctor in addition to treating the cause of the ailment. [since the abdominal mass is getting bigger]
