What Does Abdominal Pain On The Left Side Indicate?

Yes, my husband Tom is 60 years old. Over the last week he has been experiencing pains on the left side of his stomach. He describes the pain as radiating or burning. They happen 2-3 times each day and are usually worse after dinner in the evenings. About a month ago he experienced chills/sweats at about the same time each evening. In 2014, he was diagnosed with diverticulitis but really hasn t had much trouble from it. Maybe 2-3 times / year since diagnosis he experiences an issue for maybe 24 hours. This pain is very different.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As I was going through the medical history of your 60 year old husband Tom, I noted that he has been diagnosed with diverticulitis. This is associated with frequent abdominal pain and sometimes with chills especially if the patient is not following the diet as advised by his doctor.

So, I highly recommend to consult with his gastroenterologist in order to re-evaluate his case better and rule out a possible diverticulosis attack.

Give plenty of plain water and liquid foods including ice chips, broth, gelatin, etc. Advise to take medium fiber foods like milk, yogurt, cheese, pasta, bread, noodles, etc.

But most important is to consult with gastroenterologist and run a few diagnostic tests to evaluate his case better (including colonoscopy, ct-scan, abdominal ultrasound; urine analysis).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
