General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Usually, at about 6 weeks, a fetal heartbeat can be seen by ultrasound. However, sometimes it can take a little longer than 6 weeks, and it may be that your sister got pregnant a little later than expected (she may have ovulated later in her cycle than expected). So I would say it is still too early to say what this means. Repeat ultrasound in a week or two weeks would help clarify whether this is a healthy fetus, or if it is not.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
