What Does Abundant Hurthle Cell Neoplasm And Minimal Colloid In Thyroid Biopsy Mean?
My friend recently had a biopsy done on her thyroid gland, has a nodule between 1 and 2 in diameter, and the test results show: Abundant Hurthle cell neoplasm and minimal colloid. Please explain to me what exactly this may mean for her as far as the possibility of having cancer.
Hello and welcome to HCM, The biopsy report of thyroid shows presence of a type of neoplasm called Hurthle cell neoplasm. However, it is important to know whether the neoplasm is benign or malignant. Benign Hurthle cell neoplasm is well circumscribed and well limited by capsule whereas malignant Hurthle cell neoplasm is invasive and invades the capsule. Nothing more needs to be done in case of benign tumor, however, in case of malignant tumor a search for distant metastasis is required. Please go through the report again and look for any comment made on capsular invasion or blood vessel invasion. Thus, there is definitely presence of a tumor but whether it is benign or malignant has to be looked for.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
