What Does An Enlarged Diaphragm Indicate?

My 19 year old special needs daughter has had a cough, nausea, vomiting, no fever, for approximately 2 months. Then about 2 weeks ago she tested positive for influenza A. After that her breathing has kept getting worse and the cough keeps getting worse. She is now on inhalers. In a chest xray her dr did, it showed that the right side of her diaphragm is quite a bit larger that the left side. From what I ve read, this can be very serious. What is your opinion on a diaphragm that is larger on one side than the other?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It is extraordinarily rare to have an enlarged diaphragm. The diaphragm is a sheet of muscle. If it was enlarged, it may mean that there is a hernia or a mass on the diaphragm.
I suggest you to do a CT scan of the chest to see this for sure.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
