Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a rash on my legs bilat below the knee and appears to be worse around my ankle and calf region. Itchy and appears to be red spots. I do take warfarin and at times I loose hair on my lower leg and wondered if this could have any thing in common with this type of medication.
The itchy red rash on your calves and ankles is due to warfarin. This rash is also called as leuco-cytoplastic vasculitis. My recommendations are as follows: 1) Usually rash is associated with warfarin therapy. May be accompanied by any kidney failure symptoms like protein loss in urine 2) So you must be tested for kidney lesions by urine protein examination 3) With stoppage of warfarin and initiation of steroids, the rash subsides. 4) Please do inform your prescribing physician about the rash so that he can adjust the dose of warfarin and start corticosteroid for treatment. 5) Warfarin may be a causative factor for your hair loss on legs indirectly causing rash.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
