What Does At 29 Weeks Of Pregnancy Baby S Head Circumference Is Measures At 26 Weeks Indicate?

I had an ultrasound done yesterday, and the Dr is concerned because they have me at 29 weeks pregnant and the baby s head circumference is measuring at 26 weeks, and abdomen circumference is measuring at 30 weeks. My Dr moved my due date up a week when I was 12 weeks because the baby measured at 14 weeks. I am POSITIVE of my LMP date and ovulation dates because this baby was planned and we were using ovulation tests and I kept track of my dates. Could this change of date be to blame for the measurments discrepancy, and if not, how common is this and what could it mean?

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

Because your due date was changed because the baby appeared bigger at 12 weeks than it should have been, it is unlikely that wrong dating is responsible for the concern. They are worried because the size of the baby's head is proportionally small compared to the body. This is what is called an asymmetric growth pattern. This can be a normal finding (the baby may just have a big belly) or can indicate growth problems with the baby's skull They will need to do more ultrasounds and repeat the measurements over time (usually every 3-4 weeks) to monitor the growth of the skull. I do not want you to worry, as these uneven measurements usually go away by full term, but your doctor will recommend the best strategy for monitoring your baby for the healthiest outcome.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question and that my advice was helpful.

Best of luck with the rest of the pregnancy and delivery,
Dr. Brown
