Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Okay, so up until recently I ignored the fact that I had a separate hymen because it didn t really bother me much and I wasn t having sex. However, the other day I decided to have sex with my boyfriend (we are both in our 20 s) and it broke. There was quite a bit of blood and it s pretty sore now. I was wondering if it is okay to continue having sex or if I should wait until I see the gyno? I have an appointment a few weeks down the road, but we were planning on doing something for our anniversary this weekend and I was wondering if having sex would affect or worsen the issue?
Hymen breaks off and it may bleed during the first intercourse. It's nothing dangerous and you can have subsequent intercourses. Pain is also common. You don't need to worry about the future intercourse as there would be slight pain and may bleed but pain goes away quickly. All girls experience pain during the first intercourse and also most of them do bleed. So relax and take acetaminophen if the pain is severe. Also ask your partner to be gentle.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
