What Does Bleeding Upon Increasing Dosage Of Carbidopa Suggest?

Hi, I have been diagnosed with Parkinsons and have been put on carbodopa/levadopa 4 times a day. I originally started with 3 times a day and had no problem. When I increased to 4 times a day I started bleeding but not monthly. It was very light and only when I wiped after voiding. I have been treated for urinary tract infection but still is on-going. I have been to a urologist and had ultrasound, cystocopy exam, urine cultures and blood work but everything has come back negative. Have there been any problems like this with this medication. Do you know of any other tests I should be taking? I am getting nervois that it might be a serious condition and I m not catching it in time. The writeup for this med states that it could cause urinary tract infections but antibiotics don t seem to help me but then again I dont have pain or burning. Thank you for your help Sharon Vetelino

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Carbidopa Levodopa belongs to the group of medications known as antiparkinson agents, a precursor of dopamine that is used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease or Parkinson like symptoms such as stiffness, difficulty moving, shakiness or tremors. But like other medications this medication has some side effects of its own. It may cause someone's urine, saliva or sweat to turn red, black or brown. Again, increasing dose of this medication can aggravate its side effects like red coloured urine. It is a harmless side effect of this medication. If you notice red coloured urine while taking this medication, you should know that your urine may become a dark colour like red, brown or black.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
