Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I was writing when my words suddenly disappeared. I hope I can still get through to a doctor. I passed out at home recently. Doctors at the local hospital needed to give me three units of blood and one bag of iron (IV) to get me relatively back to normal. There was occult blood in my stool, of unknown origin. I am scheduled for a colonoscopy on Nov. 20. I have type 2 diabetes. My family doctor said until he knows for sure, he s going to assume I have a bleeding ulcer. He wants me to take one 20 mg. Omeprazole delayed-release tablet daily until the colonoscopy/endoscopy. I m hesitant to follow his orders because of the possible side effects, and the effect it may have on my blood sugar readings. I m taking three Metformin a day. Thanks for any help you can offer.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Varinder's Response
welcome to hcm blood in stool has to be confirmed by colonoscopy ..you also need endoscopy to rule out duodenal ulcer you were prescribed rightly to take omeprazole it is standard practice second option is tab ranitidine 150 mg two times or tab famotidine two times but omeprazole has better results if there is some bleeding point in gut during endoscopy or colonoscopy it can be taken care during the procedure itself but you did not tell about which side effect you are so worried with regards dr varinder joshi
