What Does Brown Flakes In Vaginal Discharge Indicate?

Hi! I ve had a small concern. I m expecting my period and I m having thick white discharge on my underwear. But when I wipe, there are these brown flakes and I don t understand what it is. I did have unprotected sex but my partner didn t have time to climax because I had to go to work. Can you explain to me what is going on? Thank you very much.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Brownish discharge can occur normally in all women before periods. It could denote old and dried blood from previous cycles. It is nothing to be worried. In case of foul smelling or curdy white discharge, vaginal infection should be suspected. A 5 day course of antibiotics may be required.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
