What Does Brown Semen Indicate?

Hi, I just noticed a brownish (not red) appearance in my semen. I haven t been sexually active for a good 2 months. I am otherwise healthy with no issues other than an enlarged prostate diagnosed by my urologist when I was 45 (I am now 61). Is this a serious condition and something I should worry about? Thank you. General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Incomplete data like associated symptoms such as pain, fever, or blood in the urine. Suggestive of some underlying conditions:

1. Infection such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, and herpes.
2. Inflammation or bleeding in the prostate gland, epididymis, seminal vesicles, urethra, and vas deferens.
3. Obstruction due to Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).
4. Certain medical conditions like hypertension, leukemia, liver diseases, and HIV.

In view of the above, I advise you to consult your urologist for further evaluation and to carry out some tests such as urinalysis, STD testing, prostate-specific antigen testing, and ultrasound. These tests will help determine the exact cause of your brown semen.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
