Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello ~ I am a 48 year old woman and I ve been having quite a bit of a brownish colored vaginal discharge for the past 5 days, and it has steadily been getting worse and starting to smell (Sorry, ... embarrassing situation/questions!) I finished my menstrual cycle on December 10th, had no discharge for 6 days, and then the tan-ish brown discharge began. I have never had this happen before. Should I be concerned? Do I possibly have an infection or maybe beginning to go through menopause?
Hi and welcome to Healthcaremagic. Thank you for your query. I am Dr. Rommstein, I understand your concerns and I will try to help you as much as I can.
Yes, both things are possible , but in every case the cause of brown vaginal discharge is common and usually harmless issue. If there is associated odoir then thi sis more likely to be vaginal infection, bacterial vaginosis. Less common this is sign of STD or polycstic ovarian syndrome. In this age some other hormonal disorders may be present but it rarely indicates serious problem. However, it should not be ignored if it persists, recurs or is accompanied by other symptoms and then you should see gynecolgosit for further work up.
In some cases, a yellow or brown vaginal discharge could indicate a serious problem. Wishing you good health. Regards
