Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Does Carotid Artery Peak Systolic Velocity Of 121cm/s Indicate?
my carotid arterypeaksystolic velocity 121cm/send-diastolic velocity of 24cm/s and then the internal carotid artery peak systolic velocity is 239 cm/s with an end-diastolic velocity of 32 cm/sDo you think I should be worried about that or do you think I might could be a canditate for surgery?
Your internal carotid artery systolic and diastolic peak velocity are raised as compared to the carotid artery. This is suggestive of higher pressure in an internal carotid artery (ICA).
This is indirect evidence of narrowing of the lumen of ICA and most common cause for this is atherosclerosis.
So in my opinion, you should get done CT brain with angiography to identify lumen narrowing.
Treatment will depend on the size of narrowing. If narrowing is not severe then lipid-lowering and antiplatelet drugs will be needed. If narrowing is severe then endovascular surgery is needed.
