What Does Chronic And Active Denervation In My Nerve Study Report Mean?

I had a nerve study done that showed right C7 and C8 radiculopathy with chronic and active denervation. I have muscle loss between my thumb and index fingers. How do these findings correlate with my symptoms? And what does the chronic/active denervation mean?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your right c7 and c8 nerve roots are being compressed and that's why the nerve supplying hand are also affected. Result is disuse atrophy.

Whenever any nerve is compressed, it undergoes microscopic changes called denervation in the area supplied by it. As the nerve will be compressed, it will affect muscle and so there is loss of muscle.

Muscles whose nerve supply is deficient becomes weak .You must be having cervical strain or cervical sponylosis. Take any neurotonic and consult orthopedician for treatment of root cause of nerve entrapment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Varinder Joshi
