What Does Clicking Sound Upon Bending The Knees Indicate?

I had surgery to repair a broken patella 3 months ago. I had it screwed and wired. I started physical therapy 6 weeks after surgery. Everything has been going great except for the pain. I have been able to bend the injuried knee to 130 degrees. All of a sudden there is a clicking sound every time I bend the knee. What could be causing this? Should I stop exercising and make an appointment with my surgeon?

Hello,

The clicking sensation can be due to a ligament injury. When you move the limb, it can persist. It doesn't need emergency care since many of the ligament tears of the meniscus can get cured on its own without much intervention. You need to stop using that limb more, and if you immobilize for some time, it heals better and does a little exercise in order to improve the circulation of the limb.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Archana
