What Does Constant Pain In The Left Shoulder Indicate?

I have had a constant pain in my left shoulder that runs up to the base of my skull (sometimes the entire back of my head). Sometimes it wakes me at night. I have had PT and do the exercises prescribed. I also use heat. I try ibuprofen, but am reluctant to use it too often. This has been going on for 4 months and have had no relief. What would you recommend?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You need to go to the nearest medical center, especially if there is a history of trauma, for complete clinical assessment, X-ray of the shoulder joint as well as other routine tests depending on the initial findings. After all, your doctor may suggest:
1- Rest your shoulder, by avoiding extreme physical activity such as weightlifting.
2- Prescribe analgesics such as Ibuprofen and topical drugs such as Diclofenac.
3- Muscle strengthening and stretching exercise program.
4- Muscle relaxants.
5- Steroid injections in severe arthritis of the shoulder joint.

I hope I have answered your query. Let me know if you have any further questions.
Take care.
