What Does Continued Pain In Foot Post Treatment For Cellulitis Mean?

I had cellulitis in my left leg about three weeks ago. I was prescribed antibiotics; I finished them and then was prescribed water pills and another type of antibiotic. I have finished those as well but my left foot is still sore and hurts to walk. Also my left leg is peeling a lot. Could the infection still be healing? And If so how long until the skin looks normal and I can walk pain free? Or could the foot pain be something else? The pain is primarily in the ankle and top of the left foot towards the left side. Thank you for your help.

Hi there!

Thanks for your question on HCM!

You have not mentioned your medical history. Generally, in a healthy individual, cellulitis heals after treatment with antibiotics for 7-10 days. The cure rate is reduced when you have a weakened immunity ,like diabetes, HIV, cancer or if you are on steroids. Since there is also peeling on the leg, I suggest that you get it physically examined by a surgeon. He can tell you if any blood tests like a blood count, or culture from the site needs to be done or not.

Some simple measures should be taken, such as lifting your l leg above your heart, so that gravity aids in healing.

Painkillers like Brufen can be taken for the pain, but it would be best to get it checked out.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!
