What Does Dark Shadow On An Ultrasound Report Suggest?

I recently had an ultrasound because of light post menopausal spotting. I am 67 years old, two live births, one miscarriage. The uterus was small and the ovaries could not be seen. But near where one of the ovaries should have been was a 10 cm dark shadow. A PET scan is to be scheduled soon. I am otherwise very healthy and active. Should I be be worried?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

As anticipated, ovaries are atrophied at this age. The nature of the dark shadow would get ascertained by PET scan or you may need a laparoscopy.

It might be a benign growth, fluid-filled cyst, post caesarian adhesions or enlarged lymph nodes. It also needs evaluation to rule out malignancy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
