What Does Difficulty In Swallowing Indicate?

I have this annoying feeling of something stuck in my throat. Sometimes it is difficult to swallow even a small tablet. I have frequent heartburn which I have never had before. It feels like something is stuck in my throat just below the adam s apple. Drinking water does not clear it. I was at the dentist this week for a 6-month check up. He asked if I had trouble swallowing and I told him I did. He suggested I see my doctor and said it could be due to tonsils. I do not have tonsils. They were taken out when I was an infant. I have hypothyroidism and take synthroid daily. I do not take any other medicine and do not have any other medical issues.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Frequent heartburn is suggestive of gastric acid reflux into the esophagus. Over a period of time, if untreated, the acid reflux causes narrowing of the Gastro-esophageal junction.

This can lead to difficulty in swallowing, and the feeling of something stuck in the throat. Any other disease condition causing esophageal stricture should also be ruled out.

An upper G.I. Endoscopy is very important, and the doctor can take a biopsy of any suspicious areas to rule out any malignancy. Please do consult a Gastroenterologist, who can carry out the required investigations and advise you on the management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ajit Kumar Varma
