What Does Dry Mouth Along With Swelling In The Tongue Indicate?
My son was admitted to the hosp for an overdose of medications he had been taking, like Abilify buspar, and several other ones. The hospital psychiatrist took him off those drugs and switched to Respiradol, Benzotropine, Triepital. plus OTC Pepsid, and zinc. Since his release from the hosp he cannot think, has heavy leg, tongue is swollen, horribly dry mouth and can t talk because of the swollen tongue. Should he discontinue ALL medications until we see his primary Psychiatrist on Tuesday?
Dry mouth and swelling of tongue can be a side effect of the medication that he is taking and might still be needing any of the medication to be taken off..
But as swelling of the tongue can cause choking and breathing difficulty, therefore, he should be taken to Emergency room and get evaluated..
Discontinuing all the medications is not advisable as it can cause further psychological imbalances which is not advisable without doctor's consent..
So my suggestion is to take him to an emergency doctor so that primary care can be done till you can reach his Psychiatrist..
For dry mouth he can use mouth lubricants like Oralgel and chew sugarfree chewing gums.
Hope this helps..
Regards..
