What Does Dryness Around The Nipples Indicate?

I haven t missed one day of birth control. The other day I noticed that I had dry flakey nipples and then I noticed black specks in them. I was able to get those out. Other than pregnancy, what could be the possible causes for this? Please help to ease my mind.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Changes in your breasts should be seriously taken into consideration.
Possible cause could be:
- eczema
- contact dermatitis from detergents
- exposure to sun
which are more common and less serious. Other causes include Paget's disease of the skin (a type of breast cancer).

So, I highly recommend to consult with your physician and dermatologist to determine the right diagnosis and most important to rule out more serious problems like cancer.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
