What Does Elevated Hemoglobin Levels During Pregnancy Indicate?
Hello, I left a message for my doctor, but I am feeling anxious and was hoping for a quicker answer. I am 6 weeks pregnant today. When I got initial blood work done I was 4w5 days. My hemoglobin and hematocrit came back as higher than average. My hemoglobin was at 15.3 and hematocrit was at 45.5. I am 26 in healthy weight range (138lbs). I don t smoke. I exercise regularly. I do get occasional asthma when my allergies act up and when I exercise too hard. Are these numbers too high? What could happen in my pregnancy if they are?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
That is not too high and do you have any previous report of your CBC? Because comparison is much better. If you have asthma or hypoxic attack that may induce RBC production and it can lead to high Hb (haemoglobin).
Other thing in normal pregnancy Hb should increase but with plasma level also increased too. If you have persistent high Hb than there is one condition called polycythemia is there that is possibility.
I hope I have answered your query. Let me know if you have any further questions. Regards, Dr. Bhadresh Lakhani
