What Does Elevated Lymphocyte Count Indicate?
My husband is 57 years old. He has always been very healthy. He eats a mostly vegan diet. He drinks a lot of green tea. He is a moderate runner...he has run a marathon in the past. He had the stomach flu a while back (a month or two ago); then, he had the stomach flu again. He has not felt good since that time, in over a month. He has no sinus infection, or congestion. He feels fluish all the time. He has no energy. He is fatigued and tired. He feels sluggish, and just feels bad, as if he has the flu. He has a low body temperature. He went to the doctor, and they put him on an antibiotic; they also gave him intravenious vitamin C. He takes supplements daily. His blood pressure is normal. He has not been bitten by anything. The doctor thinks that his low body temperature may be due to a thyroid problem. His white blood count was elevated slightly. Also, his lymphocyte count is elevated, which was a concern to the doctor. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Your husband's symptoms are low body temperature, elevated lymphocyte count, and low energy levels or easy fatigability. A few causes of increased lymphocyte counts could be infection (bacterial, viral, other), cancer of the blood or lymphatic system, an autoimmune disorder causing ongoing (chronic) inflammation, acute lymphocytic leukemia, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, hepatitis, hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), lymphoma, mononucleosis, syphilis, or tuberculosis.
Do complete blood picture, thyroid profile including TSH, T3 and T4, peripheral smear, ESR, CRP, and liver and kidney function tests. Most probable cause of your husband's symptoms is Hypothyroidism. Treatment depends on the cause. Please discuss the above causes and tests with your physician for appropriate treatment.

Elevated lymphocyte count is seen after an episode of infection and it is harmless and gets to normal slowly. As you had mentioned he had 2 episodes of stomach flu. Anyway I would like to mention few other causes of elevated lymphocyte count like:
1) Infection (bacterial, viral, other)
2) Cancer of the blood or lymphatic system
3) An autoimmune disorder causing ongoing (chronic) inflammation
4) Hypothyroidism
5) Infectious mononucleosis
6) Hepatitis
7) ALL Acute lymphocytic leukemia
8) Lymphoma
9) Syphilis
10) Tuberculosis
Please don't get panicked by the above list. I just mentioned all the causes to caution you. As per his symptoms, like sluggishness, lower body temperature, inactivity, he may be having hypothyroidism meaning decreased function of thyroid leading to low thyroxine levels. Hence, just have thyroid function tests done.
