What Does Excessive Sleep In A Person With Heart Ailment Suggest?
My husband had major heart surgery 5 years ago. In that surgery he had a replacement of the aortic valve. Our last visit to the cardiologist it was reported to us that there is a slight increase in a leak from the previous echo. Would this leakage be effecting his energy? He wants to sleep most of the time saying that he just doesn t feel well. He is 86 years old. Should he be seeing the cardiologist soon. His last blood test indicated that his hemogoblin was low. Could this also be a heart problem?
In my opinion, there is no reason to be worried and usually this is just temporary and self limiting. Excessive daytime sleepiness is common issues and should be considered in this case. Excessive daytime sleepiness may be caused by conditions such sleep deprivation, metabolic disturbances, sleep apnea, medications, neurological disorders such seizures and psychiatric disorders such depression. If emotional causes are ruled out then some tests can be done to confirm the diagnosis.
In my opinion, polysomnography (sleep study), is one of the necessary examinations in order to achieve a correct diagnosis. Please discuss with primary care Doctor about these issues.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Iven Romic Rommstein, General Surgeon
