What Does Free Fluid In Pelvic Ultrasound Mean?

Hi, How are you, I recently had a pelvic ultrasound and was told that I had Free Fluid in the pelvis and needed to be referred to a GYN. The ultrasound showed Free fluid around the Right Ovary, RT Adnexa, and Cul de sac. I have been having pelvic pain for a while, more abdominal pain than anything. Also, I am on birth control but still have irregular periods. What does Free fluid mean?
