What Does Gamma Glutamyl Transferase Of 98 Indicate?
Hi I have just had the result of a Gamma Glutamyl Transferase test blood test . It is 98. I have had a drink problem before and gave up for a year. However it has now crept up again.I am worried that the increased level is more than just alcohol intake.Could it be cancerous?
I read your question and I understand your concern. First I must tell you GGT is a very sensitive test which can be alterel by many factors like alcohol, some antibiotics, some sedatives, some anti-allergic medication and painkillers so I you have taken any of those substances in the days preceding the test that could be the cause. If that is not the case then the causes could be many possible diseases of liver, biliary tract and pancreas. Among those many causes is also cancer but there are many other possible alternatives. Anyway GGT is rarely involved in isolation, usually there are alterations of other liver, biliary or pancreatic tests which guide the possible hypothesis. So I wouldn't go too far ahead in panic and make assumptions if only the GGT is increased, without evaluation of other tests. I hope to have been of some help.
