What Does High MPV Level Indicate?

We just received blood test results for my 20 year old son. It says his MPV is high 10.6 the doctor did not address this number in his write up, stating that everything looks perfect in his bloodwork. Is this number a concern? Should we address it, or is everything ok?

Hi,

Blood consists of several different types of cells, which includes red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Platelets are small blood cells that play an essential role in blood clotting. One of the tests run during a Complete Blood Count (CBC) is a mean platelet volume (MPV) test. An MPV test measures the average size of the platelets. It is closely related to a platelet count test, which measures the number of platelets in the blood. A high MPV means that the platelets are larger than average. This is sometimes a sign that the body is producing too many platelets. High MPV could be associated with recent surgery, infection, inflammation, or from heavy blood loss.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
