What Does Indigestion Along With High BP Indicate?

I am 70 with history of 2011 stroke with aphasia. Tonight I went to bed and got up with really bad indigestion. I chewed 2 tums and it seems to be getting better. Blood pressure left arm 139/109 67 and right arm was 148/106 68 at midnight. My blood pressure as of 1:46 am is now left arm 135/85 60 and right arm 149/102 60. I had fried salmon patties, fried cornbread, and grits with butter. Should I be worried that it is more than indigestion. Just had physical and lab 3 weeks ago with primary care doctor and heart doctor also which told me to come back in 9 months instead of 6 month as I was doing so good.

Hello,

You have not mentioned whether you are taking blood pressure medications as your blood pressure is on the higher side. The most likely cause of the rise in blood pressure is indigestion, which leads to distress. Eating a heavy meal, which was high in fat content is not a good idea as it will lead to indigestion.

Since you have already taken two tums, you just have to wait and watch. Get your blood pressure monitored at regular intervals, and if you see any marked rise or you feel nauseous, you should immediately go to an emergency room and get yourself assessed. I would advise you to take light meals at night and avoid eating anything two hours before going to sleep. Avoid eating spicy and oily food. If you are not on blood pressure medications, you should discuss it with your physician, so that he may consider putting you on antihypertensives.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
