What Does Intense Pain In The Lower Abdomen Indicate?

My husband (52) has been having intense pain in his right hip/lower abdomen/back for about 10 days -2 weeks. We thought maybe a soft tissue injury. About two/three days into the pain, he had a bout of fever, sweating, cold skin, chills that lasted maybe 3 hours. We thought he had a mild case of food poisoning. Today I noticed that his palms and feet soles are pretty yellow (we have seen this before, but more mild). I am wondering if these symtpoms are all related and indicate a serious condition. Is there enough information listed to give you an idea?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Information is partially sufficient, you must have mentioned about food habits, bowel habits, any swelling in groin on general appearance. According to the symptoms mentioned by you, it may be a case of acute appendicitis.

It is the inflammation of appendix which starts with the pain abdomen right sided, and vomiting and anorexia follows based on size of distension of appendix, fever and sweating are also common symptoms, it is associated with peritonitis most commonly in adults, which further associated with jaundice sometimes.

Sometimes, complete or partial intestinal obstruction mimics the above symptoms. An ultrasound gives the idea about the condition.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhaskar
