I just received the report from my CT scan. Findings are there is evidence of scarring along the mid pole of the right kidney with dense cortical calcification. What does this mean? 'Thank you. I am 47 year old female. Severe pain on the right side close to appendix and around belly button. Pain gets more severed when laying down & pressing on it. Almost unbearable.

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

Dense calcification refers to deposition of calcium in your right kidney at the mid portion. It is important to know if you suffer from any metabolic conditions that cause deposition of calcium in kidneys. Any history of kidney stones and obstruction to flow of urine in the right kidney is also significant. Cortical calcification is most often associated with cortical necrosis from any cause like abnormalities in the levels of chemical ions.
