What Does Itching And Pain Inside The Ears Indicate?

I ve been referred so many times to the ENT Hospital. First time it was a fungal infection and my ear was vacuumed and it gave me temporary relief. I keep going to my GP and nothing is detected on examination they just say it s slightly inflamed and swabs are always coming back negative. It s disappointing as it feels like my left ear is crawling with to tiny insects it s so itchy deep inside my ear and pain down my neck. I honestly don t know what it could be.

Hello! Welcome to HealthcareMagic!

Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic. The problem you are facing is called Otitis Externa.
Otitis externa is a common ear infection also known as swimmer’s ear. It develops in the ear canal leading to the eardrum. In some cases, otitis externa can spread to surrounding tissue, including the bones of the jaw and face. This infection is known as malignant otitis externa.

Although otitis externa is also known as swimmer’s ear, malignant otitis externa isn’t due to water remaining in the ear canal.

Diagnosis:-
A neurological exam.
A CT scan of the head.
An MRI scan of the head.
A radionuclide scan.

Treatments:-

Antibiotics:-
Treatment for malignant otitis externa typically involves antibiotic therapy. The condition can be difficult to treat. You may need to take antibiotics for several months. You may need to receive the antibiotics intravenously, or through a vein in your arm if your condition is severe. You must continue treatment until tests show that the infection is gone.

Surgery:-
You may need surgery if significant tissue damage occurs as a result of the infection. Surgery can remove damaged tissue. Surgery occurs after the infection has been cured. Your doctor will tell you if you need surgery.

Consult your doctor for further treatment.

Thank you for the query.

Take care
