What Does Itchy Nipple Post Calcification Removal From Breast Suggest?

I had calcifications removed from the right breast just over a year ago. One of the things that made me go for a mamogram was prickling and an itch near the nipple that then would be a hive. Just recently that nipple has started to itch but no hive, should I be on the lookout for other signs?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, itchy nipple sounds to be viral infection or early bacterial inflammation of the body system. Guidelines at present:
- Keep the breasts clean with antiseptic liquid or soap
- Apply neomycin and aloe vera gel on alternate basis 5-6 times a day
- Antihistamine as Cetirizine or Diphenhydramine
- Prophylactic anti-fungal as Fluconazole (200 mg) or else
- Avoid tight bra
- Avoid nipple sucking (if applicable) by partner

Discuss the need of repeat mammography with your primary care provider.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
