What Does Low Hgb Level After Taking Iron Supplements Suggest?

Hello Doctor, I have been taking iron supplement since 2.5 months.I m 5 months pregnant.Initially my Hgb was 10.3, so i took ferromin one tablet daily for month but when i checked it after month my Hgb came down to 9.8 even after taking iron tab and ferritin was 22.So my doc asked me to take ferromin twice daily for a month.after which now when i chked again it dropped to 9.6 and B12 to 86 .so now i am continuing with ferromin one tab daily and taking B12 injection weekly.i m concerned about why my Hgb is not increasing or stable even after taking iron tablets instead its going down.will it affect my baby??

Hello,

I think you may need to do electrophoresis of haemoglobin. You may need to continue taking iron supplements to help increase haemoglobin levels and ferritin also. Of course that low haemoglobin is not good for baby.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Olgeta Xhufka, General & Family Physician
