What Does Lower Backache Along With Numbness In The Neck?

I have been diagnosed with two herniated discs in my neck, 5-6/6-7, and have severe cervical spinal stenosis. My neurosurgeon plans to do an Anterior Discectomy and two Fusions. Apparently my stenosis is so severe that more conservative measures can t be considered. I also have severe pain in my lower back, there are three bulging disc and numerous bone spurs. The pain in my lower back is causing me more pain and concern than the tingling, numbness, and muscle weakness i am experiencing from my neck. None of my doctors think anything should be done about my back but medication. I have consulted a chiropractor who believes he can not only help my back but my neck as well. I am willing to give the back a go because the muscle relaxers and pain meds aren t helping. But my neck scares me. He fully believes putting the neck back in alignment, which it is about a 12 degree angle, will solve everything. Any advice or information would greatly be appreciated.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The herniation of the discs causes the tingling and numbness in the region of the neck and sometimes even down the shoulders to the hands. It is a common condition that a lot of people suffer from.

While an anterior discectomy and fusion are permanent solutions to the problem, your neurosurgeon is best equipped to help you arrive at a decision. But be assured that spinal decompression surgeries are the bread and butter of most neurosurgeons and they are quite efficient.

In the meantime, you could try traction for the C-spine and Lumbar (lower back) spine respectively. Another promising treatment is transcutaneous electrical stimulation.

In general I would advise you against the chiropractor, especially considering how serious your symptoms are. Hope this answers your questions.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
