What Does Metallic Odour In Urine Indicate?

The past three weeks, I have noticed that my urine sometimes has a metal smell, and sometimes a fishy smell. I thought it might be lack of water, so I ve been drinking a lot more (about 6 20 0z. bottles a day), and although the odor has lessened a bit, it is still very distinct. What could be causing this?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The urine smell is due to various water byproducts present in urine. The metallic smell and fishy smell is indicating possible urinary tract infection and even dehydration. However, what you eat and drink can also affect the smell of urine. So, I highly recommend to get an urine analysis done to rule out UTI. Can buy an over the counter urine home test. Meanwhile, consume more plain water with cranberry tea.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini
