What Does Metallic Taste In The Mouth Indicate?

Aloha, I have a horrible metallic taste in my mouth. I have also noted that any nasal drainage I have seems to have the odor of metal as well, and once or twice was black in color. Today the taste worsened as soon as I swelled my daily medication. Any thoughts on what this is?

Hello,

Well, metallic taste in mouth that is worsening with intake of medicine is clearly indicating that it is a side effect of medication. In case if you have a post nasal drip then infection in your sinuses can also be a cause for metallic taste and breath.

So, first of all you should consult an Emergency room and get evaluated. In case if there is sinus infection or infection in respiratory tract then you need to get a course of antibiotics to resolve the infection.

Also to mask the bad taste, you can chew flavored sugar-free chewing gum, have flavored antiseptic mouthwash, and drink plenty of water. You can also take steam and add a few drops of Eucalyptus oil in boiling water.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora
