What Does Microangiopathic Ischemic Disease Mean?

My 84 year old mother recently had MRI s One of the results said there was microangiopathic ischemic disease. What does this mean? We are to meet with a neurologist on Tuesday, I would like to be at least a little informed about what he is going to tell us.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, Chronic microvascular ischemic are small areas in the brain where tiny blood vessels have ruptured or clotted off causing, essentially, extremely small areas of strokes. Most commonly, chronic microvascular ischemic changes are associated with chronic health problems, especially high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes. Older adults with long standing problems with these conditions will have this finding on an MRI scan. If your mother is developing cognitive impairment symptoms those can be explained by the MRI findings.
