Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my friend showed me a picture of her stool. it was brown on one side and on the other side was a long white streak of cotton like material, both were the same length and width. she said it wasn t painful but it really looked strange to me. She doesn t have insurance like I do so telling her to go to the ER isn t going to happen but maybe if I can give her an idea of what is going on I CAN CONVINCE HER TO GO SEE A DR.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advise.
If this is the first time that your friend has these cotton like structures in her stools and if she has no blood, diarrhea, fever or abdominal pain it is safe to just wait and see. If this is a repeated finding and she has other symptoms like fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain or blood with the stools she may need to see a doctor to rule out bacterial gastroenteritis or other conditions that may cause similar findings like Inflammatory bowel disease.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Antoneta Zotaj
