Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi! My girlfriend went to a hospital to get tested for HIV and on the test slip she sent to me... its written; ---- examination required: RVT -----nature of specimen : BLOOD ----laboratory report : Non Reactive my question is did my girlfriend tested for HIV or something else because i don t understand what RVT means. with great thanks.
I can understand your concern. RVT test is for testing for HIV only, so your girlfriend has been tested for HIV only. Results of this test are always either reactive or nonreactive. Reactive meaning positive for HIV and non-reactive for HIV negative. Thus, your girlfriend has tested negative for HIV.
However, ELISA test is more sensitive for testing for HIV. In addition, one should be tested for HIV within one month of possible exposure to HIV. If the test comes negative, test should be repeated after 3 months as some slow developers develop antibodies within 3 months that come positive after 3 months. Last test should be repeated after 6 months to fully confirm the presence or absence of HIV infection in body. If all these tests are negative, it can safely be said that the person is free of HIV infection.
I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. Take care.
Best, Dr. Viraj Shah
