What Does My X-ray Test Report Indicate?

My half brother in UK has a stent in his heart, and an x-ray has found a shadow there. I am American and would ask a lot of questions, he asked nothing, the consultant told him to see his PCP Monday morning. Any advice what thus could mean? Leaking blood or something?

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

There are many shadows visible on chest x ray and most of them are normal structures. A stent in the heart is placed in the coronary artery which helps to maintain good blood supply to the heart. A coronary stent is small and not clearly seen on chest x ray.

The shadow of the heart is between the lungs and more to the left side. You can ask your brother to please send a picture of his chest x ray for complete confirmation. It appears to me that he was probably seeing the normal heart shadow and there is nothing wrong with it.

Any symptoms he is having are important and this needs to be matched with any abnormal shadows in the chest x ray if any. Leaking blood is unlikely to be seen on chest x ray unless he has a heart valve problem, which can be evaluated better using echocardiography. Please do not worry.
