Hello Mr Khandelwal
Thank you for writing to us.
Just like your coronary arteries, arteries supplying other major organs in your body can have blockages. In this case, unfortunately, it is in your left renal artery. Since your right
kidney is functioning normally, it is coping up with the reduced flow to the left kidney. However, in the interest of maintaining the blood flow to your left kidney and keeping it healthy, the situation warrants that we should not ignore the present condition.
I would advice you to undergo a renal artery doppler study to directly visualize the blood flow rates in the renal artery. It will help us to classify the severity of
renal artery stenosis. If severe, I would advice you to undergo stenting to prevent damage to the kidney.
Since renal artery stenting is not very different from Coronary stenting, the procedure has the same risks as for coronary stenting. The stent would not have any particular side effects. Renal artery stenting is a relatively simple procedure and you would be admitted to the hospital for one night at the most.
Hope this helps! Please feel free to write back for any more questions that you may have.
