Hi, I just my yearly blood work done by my primary care physician. I have received the results but have not gone over them with my doctor yet. One of the tests performed was testosterone and free testosterone. I am unable to find any info on what normal levels should be. I am a 63 year old male and the results are as follows: Testosterone Total - 355 ng/ml Free Testosterone - 86.3 pg/ml Your feedback would be welcome.
Hello, Welcome to Health Care Magic. I read carefully your query and I understand your concern. From your result of testosterone lab test I see that you have a normal value of Testosterone Total referring to normal range for your age, but you have a high value of your Free Testosterone this mean that you probably have a low level of SHBG (Testosterone binding globulin). Low level SHBG causes are: hypothyroidism, diabetes, kidney problem or liver problem. To determine the cause of lower SHBG you should do additional lab test as hormonal test like TSH for hypothyroidism other test are: sugar blood and HbA1C for detecting diabetes; you should do a urinalysis and kidney function lab test like creatinine level, blood urea nitrogen and liver functional test ALT, AST. Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions. Kind regard, Dr .Marsida Janko
