Hello I'm 12 weeks pregnant and have just had the results of my mid stream urine sample back. It says pus cells nil, need blood cells nil and bacteria nil, but next to 'culture (ucl)' it says 'heavy mixed growth'. Not sure what that means, as there's no explanation. I did give another sample when I went to see my obstetrician last week. Can you advise? Thanks.
Hello and welcome to HCM, The interpretation of urine report is as follows: The urine sample does not contain pus cells or red blood cells. Infection of the urinary tract is characterized by presence of one type of bacteria on culture. You report shows abundant growth but the growth is mixed thus ruling out infection in urinary tract. Mixed growth is non-infectious but since the quantity of bacteria is quite high, caution needs be taken. I suggest you to consult your obstetrician for clinical assessment, review of reports. Antibiotic course may not be required since growth is mixed.
Hi I have gone through your complaints.your saying examination of midstream urine is normal.on culture heavy mixed growth commnted.dont worry.its mainly due to two reasons. Improper cleaning of external genital area Contamination with in The container. This time if you are planning for urine examination collect sample asseptically. Thank you Vasundhara
