What Does My Blood Test Report Indicate?

My bLood tests for B12 continue to come back high. Last week it was 1759 OG/mg and normal range is 1000. I don t supplement. Also my Alphafetoprotein came back high again, 17. I ve been thoroughly screened for cancer earlier this year and no tumors were found. Help? My doctor is clueless.

Hello,

B12 levels may rise for various reasons. Cancer is one of the potential causes. Other causes include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic kidney disease, diabetes mellitus, liver disease (cirrhosis for example), obesity, etc.

AFP may rise due to various malignant disorders but also due to various benign disorders - including liver disorders.

We can't rely on such indices to diagnose cancer but it can be suspected. If there's no symptom and no finding then you can only do follow-up testing.

Your doctor should try to identify other potential causes (like the liver disorders which may explain both the high vitamin B.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
